Driving wins when: you have 3+ people splitting gas, the festival is within 6 hours, you need to bring heavy camp gear. Flying wins when: distance is 6+ hours, you're renting gear on-site, or time off work is limited.
Assign one car per 3-4 people. The driver should not be responsible for navigation — assign a co-pilot. Agree on departure time the night before (not morning-of). Build in 30 min buffer for the person who's always late.
For camping festivals: arrive early on Day 0 (gates open). Early arrival = better campsite selection. For non-camping: arrive the afternoon before Day 1 to settle into your hotel and rest.
Most festivals have tiered parking (GA, preferred, VIP). Preferred parking is often worth the upgrade — shorter walk with heavy gear. Take a photo of your parking spot marker. Write it on your arm.
Don't drive home immediately after the last night. Book an extra hotel night or plan to leave mid-morning. Post-festival fatigue is real and dangerous. If driving, rotate drivers every 2 hours.
